The Child Victim Act Could Open Doors for Jeff Herman

Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) is sponsoring the Child Victims act in New York. This act is a Senate bill that would get rid of the statute of limitations on both the criminal civil levels for cases of childhood sexual abuse. Currently, civil legal action must be taken to court within five years of a sexual abuse crime being committed, and, in the case of a civil lawsuit, one would have only one year to sue a different person (this limit is increased to three years if the person being sued belongs to something like a school or a church). The statute of limitations for criminal cases is also five years, but this countdown does not start until the victim turns 18. This means that a victim could potentially have until the age 23 to pursue a lawsuit or press charges.

Polling has shown that a majority of New York citizens support the bill. Additional support is being gained through endorsements from Corey Feldman, an actor, and Sarah Powers-Barnhard, a team USA volleyball player. New Yorkers Against Hidden Predators, a New York based coalition, is also helping to gather support for the Child Victims act.
